Epic Games lawsuit against Google that Google must give rival third-party app stores access to the full catalog of Google Play apps and distribute third-party stores.
So, this comes to an end because the court has made a final decision on this issue. Court has mandated that Google must allow third-party app stores to access its extensive catalog of applications available on the Google Play Store. This is now going to be a significant shift in the area of Android app distribution.
Judge James Donato declared the final order recently that Google must provide access to rival app stores for a period of three years, beginning on November 1, 2024. This change will allow developers to work on Google Play and also allow users to use types of apps without restriction until developers choose to do so.
In the opening of Play Store to competition, Google has also been ordered to discontinue the mandatory use of Google Play Billing for apps listed on its platform. Also allows developers to inform users about alternative payment options within the Play store and enables them to add external download links for their apps. Furthermore, developers have to have a permit to set their own prices in Google Play store.
This case addresses concerns that Google has maintained a monopoly over app distribution, making it difficult for competitors to live. Epic’s lawsuit pointed out the matter of various agreements Google has with developers and device manufacturers which created a wall for new entrants in the app store market.
While Google has the power of app security, the decision allows for “reasonable measures” to be implemented to maintain safety standards. Google has eight months for the changes to develop the framework and establish it. Both Epic and Google appointed a technical committee to oversee the development.
